Mission: Four One Forty

Kansas Rock City

Labeled with the now oh-so-trendy label of "emo", the Get Up Kids have been rocking the nation from their hometown of Kansas City, Missouri since 1996.  Their most recent release, On A Wire, is a pleasant contribution added to their already profilic discography.  As to the passe labeling of his group, singer/guitarist Matt Pryor says, "It's sort of like every year, a whole new group of people seems to learn the term, and so it just keeps coming back up again with different people. I'm used to it now, and it doesn't bother me at all, because I figure it's just sort of a marketing term. It's sort of like the only people who really need to use it are journalists and people who work in record stores."  As for the sound, their midwestern influence peeks through a post-punk maturity in well crafted songs like Grunge Pig and the beatlesesque All That I Know.  The highlight song is actualy the very first, Overdue.  A tender acoustic driven song in which Pryor expresses his contempt for a father that  was "24 years overdue/  What kind of role model are you?"  An excellent purchase, with a beautiful visual design in the cover sleeve (ok, I'm a sucker for pretty pictures).  But please, don't buy it just cuz it's emo.  Buy it cuz its damn good music, no matter what the label.
