..Incubus..
Thursday, June 27th,
Incubus played to a packed eager audience in Jacksonville, Florida. Festivities began at 7:30 sharp with the way awesome,
yet relatively unknown band Phantom Planets. The Planets are out of LA and truly know how to get attention. You may know them
from their song California. A must download. The lead singer owned the stage as he jumped all around even interacted with
the fans. At one point half the band was playing the drums along with their actual drummer. My favorite part was when the
lead singer said, "Usually, bands ask the audience how they are doing, but we want you to ask us how we're doing." That lead
into a song that started with, "I'm doing fine." There was a little meet and greet after the show, but I sadly missed it.
There was only one opening band so Incubus had plenty of time for a 20
song set and encore. With the latest CD being Morning View at 8:30 a beautiful back screen displayed a sunrise, sunset, and
a moonrise, and set. All the while with crickets chirping. Now I am a big Brandon Boyd fan-the lead singer, so I must admit
I was mostly focused on him. Incubus rocked out with a great mix of new songs and songs from previous CD's-Make Yourself,
S.C.I.E.N.C.E, and Fungus Amongus. After an hour of crowd-surfing, moshing, and 11 of you favorite Incubus songs, the band
slowed things down. A homey atmosphere was created with couches and end-tables. The band sat down with Mike on acoustic and
Brandon singing. Next Jose came out and jammed along to Pardon Me. Lighters raised in the air, the crowd singing along,
it felt like a big family. After that somber moment the band picked up speed again and Brandon's shirt came off. (Don't look
so surprised.) The band kept us eagerly awaiting an encore. Finally, they came out and played 2 more songs ending with Aqueous
Transmission. As the song ended one by one the band member waved farewell and left the stage.
Personal highlights-nifty psychedelic laser lights on the back wall, Brandon's heartwarming hugging Mike in the middle of
a song, Brandon's saying thank-you after each song and taking on a $1,000 bet to keep a stuffed animal on his shoulder. A
joke, but for those who are curious-the toy fell. For those who want to know more about the musical talents Brandon played
a variety of bongo type drums, and Jose had a rack of guitars back stage and even played a sitar. So, to sum up-Incubus is
amazing (not that I'm biased or anything). And Phantom Planets is worth checking out if you haven't already. And suprising
to me, the audience was not merely teeny-boppers, but men and women of all ages. If and when Incubus comes near your town,
don't be one of the ones to miss it. You'll regret it. Did I mention Brandon takes his shirt off? -Kat Larson
